Forget the Field: Eastside Kings Turns One Austin Corner Into a Blues Crawl

On October 17–18, East 12th and Chicon will trade the giant-festival sprawl for guitars, horns, soul food, and a whole lot of wandering.

Start where the sound leaks out

Picture this: you leave a free blues workshop at the George Washington Carver Museum, then follow guitar noise toward East 12th and Chicon. There are wristbands, food, classic cars, local vendors, and more than one direction worth walking.

That’s the shape of Eastside Kings Festival, returning October 17–18 for its 14th year. More than 12 bands are scheduled each day. But the fun part is that they aren’t trapped behind one enormous main stage.

Eastside Kings is built as a cluster of nearby rooms, streets, and open-air spots in historic East Austin. It feels less like entering a festival compound and more like joining a neighborhood with excellent timing.

A festival with actual corners

Big festivals can make music feel like airport travel. You walk forever, stare at a map, buy a $19 lemonade, and miss the band you came for while finding a bathroom.

Eastside Kings goes the other direction. Its venues gather around East 12th, Salina, and Chicon, with outdoor sets and club shows close together. Saturday includes local vendors, while Sunday brings a food-court-style setup and a late artist jam.

That compactness changes the whole game. You can choose between Joe Barr, Peaches Staten, Tomar & the FC’s, Nora Jean Wallace, Honeybee Neal, and others without treating the day like a military operation.

The old circuit is still humming

This little patch of Austin holds more than a convenient set of blocks. During segregation, Black East Austin had a network of music spaces where musicians and audiences gathered. The Victory Grill, opened in 1945, began as a café welcoming Black soldiers and musicians before becoming a noted music club.

Eastside Kings sits inside that longer story. The Eastside Kings Foundation says its mission is preserving and promoting African American blues, jazz, and gospel, especially musicians who have stayed less famous than they deserve.

The name has roots, too. Founder Eddie Stout used “Eastside Kings” for a 1999 Dialtone Records album documenting Austin players Clarence Pierce, Willie Sampson, and Donald “Duck” Jennings. Those musicians then used the name for gigs, and the festival grew as a tribute to them and East Austin’s postwar blues circuit.

Blues, but don’t put it in a glass box

Nobody needs blues preserved like a museum spoon. Eastside Kings makes room for jazz and gospel, plus a Sunday close from Step Rideau & the Zydeco Outlaws. Zydeco is a Gulf South dance music built around accordion, washboard rhythms, and the strong possibility that sitting still will look ridiculous.

That mix is the point. Blues is not a sealed-off “heritage genre,” kept alive by people wearing fedoras and discussing guitar pedals at dangerous length. It has neighbors, cousins, dancers, church sounds, horn lines, and musicians who sit in with each other.

An earlier account of the festival described packed, loud clubs, players joining one another, and music spilling toward the street. No one can promise the exact mood four years later. Still, the format is made for that kind of collision.

Wear shoes made for detours

Daily wristbands are listed at $30, while children under 12 get into the festival free. The Saturday Living Blues Workshop at the Carver Museum is free and first-come, first-served, so you can begin with some history before the guitars start throwing elbows.

Austin loves calling itself the Live Music Capital of the World. Fine. But Eastside Kings offers a better-sized version of that boast: a few blocks, a few doors, a bunch of choices, and music that has been moving through East Austin for generations.

Show up curious, keep walking, and let the next drumbeat make the decision for you.
