Evansville’s Nut Club Has Built a 137-Restaurant Street Monster
A 1921 masked ball grew into a six-day carnival where local nonprofits run the kitchens, the parade rolls, and fried brain sandwiches get their moment.

First, picture the donut burger
A donut burger is exactly what it sounds like: a burger served on a donut. It is one of the creatures roaming West Franklin Street in Evansville, Indiana, starting today. So are barbecue parfaits, lemon shake-ups, Grippo’s-seasoned snacks, and fried brain sandwiches.
That last one is a longtime regional specialty, not a prank invented for internet attention. The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival runs Monday, October 5, through Saturday, October 10. It has rides, contests, parades, amateur performers, and more than 137 food booths.
The name came before the snacks
The West Side Nut Club began in 1921, when local businessmen threw a one-night Halloween event. There was a costume parade, a masked ball, and, because Evansville clearly understood the assignment, a pet parade. Nobody started this thing by saying, “Let’s create a giant food court.”
Food booths and live entertainment arrived in the 1950s. That shifted the party from a Halloween blowout into the street festival people know now. The old ingredients stayed in the pot, though: costumes, pets, amateur acts, royalty contests, and the general belief that a parade improves almost anything.
One street, 137 tiny restaurants
Here’s the genuinely strange and excellent part. Those 137 booths are run by nonprofit or not-for-profit groups, meaning organizations that use their money to support a mission instead of paying owners profits. For most groups involved, the festival is their main fundraiser of the year.
That makes Franklin Street a distributed restaurant. “Distributed” means spread among many separate operators instead of controlled by one big company. For six days, a century-old neighborhood event becomes a volunteer-built eating machine with booth numbers and a Munchie Map.
The rides and deep fryers are the loud layer. Underneath, local groups are selling food to raise money for their work. The donut burger gets the photograph. The booth network is the weird civic magic trick.
Opening night has zero interest in being cool
Rides open at 2 p.m. today. The University of Evansville basketball team appears at 6 p.m., followed by a Lighthouse Parade down Franklin Street at 7. Then the first Amateur Hour starts at 8 p.m., because apparently a regular Monday night needed more pageantry.
The rest of the week keeps stacking town rituals like a wobbling plate of nachos. There’s tug-of-war, youth recognition, a queen-and-king contest, amateur finals, the pet parade, and the big final-day parade. It is not sleekly curated. Thank goodness.
A celebrity-heavy festival can feel like somebody rented a town for the weekend. This one feels like the town found its storage closet, pulled out every beloved oddity, and gave it a time slot.
A big appetite with a civic engine
The Nut Club says the festival draws more than 200,000 people. Explore Evansville estimates more than 280,000 visitors over the week and about $3.8 million in food-booth sales. Those are organizer and tourism estimates, not independently audited counts, but either number describes a very busy street.
The festival’s real flex is longevity. A masked ball from 1921 now shares space with food maps, carnival rides, and 137 temporary kitchens. It has kept changing without sanding off its goofy edges.
So yes, stare respectfully at the fried brain sandwich. Then notice the volunteers behind the counter, turning a street party into fuel for local groups. Somewhere between the Lighthouse Parade and the lemon shake-up, Evansville makes weirdness pull its own weight.
