Pumpkin Season Has a $30,000 Boss Battle

Half Moon Bay’s annual weigh-off turns one fragile orange fruit into a backyard engineering project, a Main Street spectacle, and maybe a new world record.

First, Strap the Squash to a Lift

Picture a lifting strap cinched around a pumpkin so huge it needs machinery to reach a scale. It’s bright orange, round-ish, and heavier than many cars. One bad crack can wreck months of work.

That’s the tension heading to Half Moon Bay, California, on Monday, October 12. From 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Main Street hosts the 53rd Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off. The town will watch giant pumpkins get hoisted, measured, and judged by their mass.

The winner earns $9 per pound. But the real banana peel is a $30,000 record prize package for anybody who breaks the current world record. That number is 2,819 pounds and 4 ounces, grown in 2025 by British twin brothers Ian and Stuart Paton.

A Jack-o’-Lantern With a Systems Plan

Nobody accidentally grows a 2,000-pound pumpkin while forgetting to mow the lawn. Competitive growers usually begin with Atlantic Giant seeds. Those seeds come from proven giant-producing lines, meaning plants with a family history of making enormous fruit.

Then comes the part that makes this feel like backyard research and development. Growers choose one pumpkin for the plant to support. They remove competing fruit, manage water and nutrients, watch sunlight, fight pests, and keep disease away.

A pumpkin’s vascular system is its internal network for moving water and nutrients. Giant pumpkins move those supplies unusually fast. At peak growth, a single fruit can add 50 to 70 pounds a day. It can also drink hundreds of gallons of water daily, which is a lot of responsibility for something destined to become a very intimidating pie ingredient.

The Orange Arms Race Got Serious

Half Moon Bay’s contest began in 1974 as a challenge with Circleville, Ohio. Both towns claimed to be pumpkin capitals. The first Half Moon Bay winner weighed 132 pounds and beat its rival by one pound.

Now look at the escalation. Half Moon Bay’s 2004 winner weighed 1,446 pounds. In 2023, Travis Gienger brought a 2,749-pound pumpkin to the event and set the world record at the time.

That climb came from decades of selective breeding, seed trading, hand-pollination, and obsessive attention. Hand-pollination means growers deliberately move pollen between flowers instead of leaving the job entirely to insects. It sounds peaceful until you remember these people are trying to build a living orange tank.

Six Pounds Can Haunt a Person

The contest is a numbers game, but it has real nerves. Brandon Dawson of Santa Rosa lost the 2024 contest by six pounds. In 2025, he returned with a 2,346-pound pumpkin and won.

Dawson was then a manufacturing engineer at Rivian. He said the precision habits from his engineering work helped him manage watering and sunlight. His children also joined him in the patch, because apparently family time can include supervising a fruit that gains more weight in a day than a large dog.

Getting the pumpkin to town is its own final exam. The fruit must survive transport without damage. At the weigh-off, cranes or lifts handle the giants, volunteers maintain the results board, and every crowd member gets to stare at a vegetable having a much more dramatic Monday than they are.

Main Street, Global Stakes, Extremely Large Gourd

The Half Moon Bay event is an official site of the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth. That organization sets standards used by major giant-produce contests, including the standards behind the Patons’ current record.

So this is a local gathering with international bragging rights. There’s music, costumed spectators, families, and a public scale reveal. There’s also a genuine shot at bringing the record back from Britain, assuming someone can top 2,819 pounds and 4 ounces.

That’s why the weigh-off works. A backyard patch becomes a test lab. A town street becomes a launchpad. And somewhere, a pumpkin is drinking heroic amounts of water and preparing to make forklifts nervous.
