A Magician Walks Into Theatre Row With a Stick Fight and a Punchline
United Solo’s 21st season starts in Manhattan with Bryan Stoops, whose opening-night mix of comedy, magic, and martial arts makes a strong case for the full weird human résumé.

One person. Several hats. No hiding place.
Picture a lone performer under theater lights, trying to land a joke after discussing stick fighting. Then add magic. That’s the first listed show of United Solo Theatre Festival’s new season, and honestly, it sounds correctly unhinged.
The 21st annual festival begins today at Theatre Row on West 42nd Street. It runs through November 22, bringing solo performers from the United States and abroad into one Manhattan building.
Tomorrow at 7 p.m., Bryan Stoops opens the listed schedule with Magic, Martial Arts & Standup. Theatre Row currently lists the performance as sold out, with a waitlist.
The title is doing exactly what it says
Stoops is not borrowing the martial-arts part for a spicy poster. Dog Brothers Martial Arts Association lists him as “Guide Dog,” a Full Dog Brother with just under 50 real-contact stick fights.
That group also lists training or teaching credentials across Filipino martial arts, Jeet Kune Do, Thai boxing, Wing Chun, Shaolin Kempo, Tae Kwon Do, and more. Jeet Kune Do is a martial-arts approach associated with Bruce Lee that favors practical adaptation over rigid forms.
His own comedy site says he has performed in 22 countries on five continents. It lists rooms including the Comedy Store, Gotham Comedy Club, the Apollo Theater, and the Edinburgh Fringe; those career details are self-reported. A 2023 podcast description also called him a former professional magician, educator, podcaster, martial artist, and comedian.
Solo theater has room for the odd ducks
United Solo is not a festival of people standing sadly beside a stool for 75 minutes. Its schedule includes dramas and comic work, a one-man “Mass,” a show about New York City, and a one-woman show about being trapped in a one-woman show.
It also includes free Broadway Karaoke events where volunteers take part. The first is set for October 25, and another lands on closing day. That is a very funny way to stretch the definition of “solo.”
Past editions have included storytelling, stand-up, mime, dance, puppetry, multimedia, magic, musicals, documentary theater, and improvisation. A variety bill is an old-style live show built from different kinds of acts. United Solo feels like its scrappy modern cousin, wearing theater shoes.
The dangerous little thrill of one body onstage
Solo theater is exposed in a special way. One artist has to manage the story, the pace, the physical work, the technical moments, and the strange chemistry of a room full of strangers.
Director Cynthia Nixon described solo theater as “uniquely difficult” in 2016 because the artist is alone onstage. No scene partner can catch a dropped beat. No ensemble can absorb a wobble.
United Solo has kept making room for that wobble for two decades. The festival says it has presented more than 2,000 productions in its first 20 seasons. Earlier reporting counted 150 solo productions from six continents in 2015, while the 2019 edition had more than 130 productions and could host up to five shows daily.
Bring your whole résumé, you freak
The juicy part of Stoops’s opening slot is not merely that a comic knows martial arts. It’s that an Off-Broadway festival can treat comedy, magic, and combat training as ingredients for one evening instead of forcing them into separate little boxes.
That seems to be United Solo’s trick. Its artists can arrive with a full backpack of skills, stories, habits, and glorious baggage, then find out whether it holds together in front of actual people.
Tomorrow, one sold-out room gets to see if the jokes, the magic, and the fight training share a pulse. That’s a better gamble than another tidy label.
